Island City Robotics (ICR) is an after-school robotics program based out of Will C. Wood Middle School in Alameda, California.
ICR came into being in the summer of 2015 when an Alameda robotics team, FRC 4186 - The Aztechs, found themselves without a sponsor school or build space after their fourth year of competition. Their original school simply no longer had the resources to support them. Wood Middle School jumped at the opportunity to host the team, having just restructured the school and opened a community Makerspace.
With the help of current Aztechs mentors and students, the goal is to expand the robotics program to include middle school participants, and eventually elementary school students - participating in FLL and FTC through the FIRST robotics organization.
Awesome, but what is FIRST?
FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology", and was founded by the inventor of the segway, Dean Kamen, over 25 years ago. With the goal of having fun and inspiring the next generations of students, FIRST quickly grew from a small operation that only catered to high school students - to an international organization that includes participants grades K-12. FIRST focuses on the concepts of gracious professionalism and coopertition, the idea that though students may be competing against each other in events, we're all in this together.
